Planting Rye Grass

Rye grasses were brought to the United States of America from Europe originally but now they are grown and cultivated all over the country. There are two types of rye grasses the annual and the perennial. The annual type is obviously seasonal so a lot of planning has to be done while mixing them with the regular lawn grass so that they don’t leave any obvious patches on your lawn. The perennial variety of rye grass is easier and safer to grow because they will grow through out the year. They are the cool season grass and also they grow very fast and that is why they are widely adapted as there is no long wait to have a fully grown lawn.

Rye grasses actually grow on its own and can be grown in the northern states on their own for lawns. Many times different kinds of grass is grown together using seeding mixtures. The annual rye grass is also grown using seeds and is also preferred lawn grass as it prefers the cooler areas. The annual rye grass is also easy to grow because it adapts to any kind of soil and is more tolerant. Other advantages are it germinates fast and grows much faster than the other varieties of grass.

Usually the annual rye grass is used as filler for slow growing perennial varieties of grass. They are perfect for short term use. Both the variety of grasses also acts as a barrier of soil erosion while the permanent lawn is growing. Rye grass is also very easy to grow from seeds and all you have to do is just throw the seeds into the soil to grow the grass. Landscapists typically over seed the lawn area so that when the warm season grasses slow down in winter this grass takes over and you still have a green lawn.
